IF YOU GIVE A TEEN A SEWING MACHINE

Unexpected things happen. Here is what happened to me.

My mother was a dressmaker and made a living with sewing. She did not encourage me into sewing because according to her it is not a skill that is appreciated. Instead my mother encouraged me to study a profession.

However, I continued to ask her for sewing lessons and she finally gave in and allowed me to use her machines, bought me some patterns and fabric. Although she did this for me she was still reluctant in teaching me and left me to sew without much help from her. Now I think she wanted me to get discouraged with sewing or simply testing how much I really wanted to learn.

I admit I had moment of frustration but I truly wanted nice clothes before I started middle school and I certainly could not afford to buy new clothes. Back then the thrift stores were out of the question. My Hunger for looking good kept me going and I ended up with one of kind fashion that I was proud to wear.

Beside the new wardrobe I developed a character that has gotten me through hard times. Here I share how sewing impacted my life in a positive way.

1. I learned to focus and get into the Zone. When one sews the world and it’s problems disappear for a few hours and it is replaced with a feeling of progress and accomplishment.
2. I learned to stick to a project until it was completed. K
3. I learned that making mistakes was part of the process.
4. I learned to enjoy the process and not just the end result.
5. I found out I was a creative person.
6. I learned that some days are all about frustration but only sometimes.
7. I learned to appreciate the work that goes into sewing garments and that it’s not as easy as it looks.
8. I learned to challenge myself with more difficult garments.
9. I kept busy and this stopped me from thinking and doing nonsense.
10. I felt useful and became generous because I wanted to share my creations.
